Sveta Sofia Church
The Sveta Sofia or Saint Sofia Church is one of the oldest churches in Sofia and dates back to 6th century. The church was given the status of a metropolitan church in between 12-14th century. Later in the 16th century, during Ottoman Rule, Saint Sofia Church was converted into a mosque. At present the structure is a precious piece depicting early Christian architecture in the southeastern Europe.
Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral
The symbol of Bulgaria - Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral, is a magnificent church located in Sofia. This awe-inspiring structure was constructed in between 1882-1912 in the memory of nearly 200,000 Russian soldiers who lost their lives while fighting for Bulgaria's independence (Russo-Turkish war - 1877-78). The church's architecture has been designed by Alexander Pomerantsev (Russian architect) in the Neo-Byzantine style.
Boyana Church
Boyana Church is a 13th century structure and is listed under UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The structure and its almost 90 murals are amongst the renowned examples of medieval artwork of Bulgaria. On the walls of the church are displayed near about 89 scenes and 240 human images. At a distance of nearly 2 kilometers is located the National Museum of History. Entry to both - the Church and the Museum is covered in a combined ticket.
